Flying an Event

An event is a route we publish for everybody to fly: a fixed chain of legs, a completion bonus, and a leaderboard.

An event is a route we publish for everybody to fly: a fixed chain of legs, a completion bonus, and a leaderboard. You accept it, the app builds it as your active roster, and you fly it like any other day.

What an event is

Events lives under Community in the nav. Each event is a card with its artwork, its tags, how many legs it has and what the completion bonus is worth.

Open one and the panel on the right shows the whole thing:

  • the description, and the tags underneath it;
  • the Legs table: the sector, the flight time, and the callsign and aircraft we have set for each leg;
  • the bonus, as plus so many points on completion;
  • Accept Event;
  • the Leaderboard, which is everybody who has finished it.

A card you have already touched carries a ribbon: In progress, Completed or Failed.

Before you accept

  • No active roster. An event becomes your active roster, and you can only have one. Finish the roster you are on, or abandon it.
  • Turnaround difficulty, in Settings under Roster. It is read once, at the moment you accept, to space the event's legs. Changing it afterwards does not move them.
  • SimBrief username, under the SimBrief tile in Settings. An event roster arrives with no flight plans and you dispatch each leg yourself.

Watch out: accepting is not a booking. The roster goes live there and then, with the first leg open, so accept an event when you are ready to fly it rather than when you spot it.

Accepting one

1. Set the first off blocks time

Accept Event asks for one thing: the First off-blocks time. It is a date and a time, in your own computer's local time, not UTC, and it starts an hour from now unless you change it.

  • It cannot be more than 30 minutes in the past.
  • It has to be inside the next 30 days.

Everything else about the day is worked out from that one time.

2. Accept and activate

Accept & Activate builds the roster and takes you to the Roster screen with leg 1 open. The roster is named after the event and takes its aircraft from the first leg.

How the legs are spaced

off blocks = the previous leg's in blocks + turnaround
+ taxi out     =  15 minutes, fixed
+ flight time = the event's own figure for that leg
+ taxi in      =  15 minutes, fixed
= in blocks, which starts the next turnaround

The turnaround is the minimum for your tier: 40 minutes on Easy, 30 on Regular, 25 on Hard, 20 on Extreme. So the same event is a shorter day on Extreme than it is on Easy, and worth more per leg.

Those taxi figures are fixed at 15 and 15 for an event, whatever you normally use. The flight time is the event's own figure, not SimBrief's, so expect the real block times to drift from the schedule once you start flying.

Flying it

An event roster is an ordinary roster in every way except that you did not build it. Nothing is linked to SimBrief yet, so each leg needs dispatching as you come to it.

  • On the Roster screen, the open leg has Open in SimBrief. Only the open leg does: you cannot dispatch leg 3 while leg 1 is live.
  • Click it, then Generate OFP on the SimBrief page it opens.
  • Use Fetch Latest in the aircraft and in GSX to load the plan.
  • Fly the leg. When it closes and the roster advances, do the same two clicks for the next one.

The event already tells you the callsign and the aircraft for each leg, so fly it as published. The point of an event is that everybody on the leaderboard flew the same day.

How it is scored

Every point you would normally earn, you earn here: your times, your landing, the comfort penalties, perfect turnarounds, the tier bonus and any challenging airport on the route.

  • The completion bonus is added to the final leg, the moment the last leg goes in blocks and the roster completes.
  • Your place on the leaderboard is the net points of the whole event roster, bonus included, not the bonus on its own.
  • The leaderboard lists finishers only, best points first. A tie goes to whoever finished first.

So turning up is not enough, and neither is a clean first leg. The pilot who flies the whole chain well wins it.

What loses an attempt

Watch out: Abandon on an event roster marks the attempt Failed and takes back every bonus earned on that roster: perfect turnarounds, the multi leg and long flight bonuses, the tier bonus and any challenging airport bonus. Saving a different roster while an event is live does the same thing.

A failed attempt is not the end of it. The event goes back to offering you Accept Event and you can start it again from leg 1. An event you have completed cannot be reflown for points, and the button does not come back.

If something goes wrong

Finish or abandon your current roster before accepting an event. You have an active roster. Fly it out, or use Abandon at the top right of the Roster panel, then come back.

You have already completed this event. One completion per pilot. Your run is on the leaderboard and cannot be improved on.

First OBT must not be more than 30 minutes in the past. The time you typed has already gone. Push it forward.

First OBT must be within the next 30 days. Check the date as well as the time. The field often opens on today's date and it is easy to leave the month behind.

There is no Accept Event button. Either you have completed the event, or an attempt is already in progress. Check the ribbon on the card.

The card says Failed and you did not abandon anything. Saving another roster while an event roster is active fails the attempt. Accept the event again and start over.

The leg has no Open in SimBrief. It is not the open leg. Events dispatch one leg at a time, in order.

No events right now. Nothing is published at the moment. New events are announced on Discord before they appear.

This feature is currently disabled. Events has been switched off on our side, usually while something is being fixed. Nothing on your machine will change that.
